This week on Clear Lake Connections Podcast presented by UTMB Health: Meet Dr. Renny Varghese, MD, MBA, Doctor of Family Practice and Primary Care at UTMB. In this weeks episode, Dr. Renny discusses June being Men’s Health month and how to tackle many of the things men dodge when it comes to putting their health first. Dr. Varghese also gives tips on what men should keep an eye out for when they reach certain ages, how important it is to build a relationship with your physician and how the significance of restoring health and wellness comes from a spiritual and mental standpoint as well.

June is Men’s Health Month and 3/5 men don’t get a physical, 40% only go to the doctor when there is a big problem, 50 percent don’t talk about their health when they go to the doctor and 19 percent only go because they’re told. Below is a list of tips of things men of all ages should keep an eye on:
- Weight
- Stress Level
- Sleep
- What you’re eating and bringing into your body

- Check their cholesterol levels
Cancer awareness in men:
- Colon cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Heart Disease
- Diabetes
Why do men have such a tough time talking about health and heath issues? How should they approach it?
- Its hard to talk to a stranger about it
- If you build a relationship with your physician, you can get it done.
Tips that will keep men at their highest fit level:
- Establish care
- Get basic bloodwork
- Check your family history
- Regular screening in your later age
They’re not trying to treat conditions, they’re trying to prevent them. By doing it early they’re catching things before they become a problem. The key is get a good quality of life

Dr. Varghese is a local product of UTMB, his Mom worked at UTMB and Clear Horizons Early High School propelled him to college and med school.
