Meet Dr. William Weiss, Orthopedic Surgeon at UTMB. In this week’s episode, Dr. Weiss discusses preventative measures parents can take when it comes to kids and sports prone injuries. Dr. Weiss also talks about how technology has really opened the door for many surgical possibilities, the importance of having orthopedic knowledge at sports events and how far the orthopedics profession has come in recent years.

When it comes to athletes, Dr.Weiss takes care of people of all ages. His preference is the younger athletes from the ages 12-40. He says that the most common injury that he is sees in younger athletes are ACL and Meniscus tears that he sees come from both soccer and football players. As patients get older into their 30s and 40s things like arthritis start to creep in a little more but is still pretty mild at this stage. In the over 40 crowd it is definitely more of the arthuritis which is getting harder and harder to deal with.

Dr.Weiss says that some of the more recent developments in his field that have heightened in the past few years. He also says that Orthopedics have come a long way, it used to be a very small specialty.

The number of things that they have been doing has grown and one of these things is sports medicine. Part of it is technology driven because of all of the different camera, fiberoptics etc. Now a days there is a lot that technology that has opened up and now they can fix what they had not fixed in the past.

Dr.Weiss has an interesting background, he is Canadian and did his medical training, medical school and residency there. He then went to Dallas and was able to find work there and eventually move to Houston. With a large sports presence, the opportunities are limitless. His advice is to be present, be the one there on the sidelines and offer knowledge. As a medical community, they are trying to put themselves in the position to be there for athletes because they care. Growing the program but also growing their department is very important especially because they have somebody for everything.
