Coast Guard Battles Fire On Gulf Coast Oil Platform

Four people on board the oil platform were rescued by a supply vessel.

GULF OF MEXICO -- The U.S. Coast Guard is battling a fire that erupted on an oil platform about 80 miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

The Coast Guard said in a new release that the fire was reported at 2:30 a.m. and that four people who were on the platform were evacuated and rescued by a supply ship in the area.

There are four vessels there helping to extinguish the blaze at this time, Coast Guard officials said in a statement.

There were no injuries.

In April 2010, fire erupted on the British Petroleum oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, sparking an explosion that killed 11 people.

The disaster, which is considered the worst oil disasters ever recorded, resulted in millions of gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico before it was eventually capped.
