Ex-Texas City Cop Indicted On Felony Theft Charge

TEXAS CITY, TX — A former Texas City Police Officer accused of stealing more than $2,400 from a dying man in December 2016, has been indicted on felony theft changes by a Galveston County grand jury.

Linnard Crouch, 41, was indicted on Wednesday and turned himself in at the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office. (Want to get daily news updates and hear about other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Clear Lake Patch morning newsletter.)

Crouch resigned from the Texas City Police Department in January after allegations surfaced that he stole $2,400 in cash from James Mabe, who was suffering during a medical emergency and died a short time later.

The incident was recorded on Crouch’s body camera, investigators in the case said.

The family of James Mabe said the 74-year old man was using the money to go Christmas shopping, and was driving home when he suffered a medical emergency on Loop 197, KPRC reported.

Crouch responded to the medical emergency, and is accused of taking the money from Mabe’s pocket.

Mabe died at an area hospital later that day.

Felony theft is considered a state jail felony offense in Texas, and punishable with a possible sentence of six months to two years confinement.
