Tropical Storm Cindy: Galveston County Issues Voluntarily Evacuation As Storm Moves Closer

The voluntary evacuation encourages elderly residents and residents with medical conditions to make arrangements to leave

BOLIVAR PENINSULA, TX — Galveston County Judge Mark Henry issued a voluntary evacuation Tuesday for residents on Bolivar Peninsula, including the unincorporated areas of Crystal Beach, Port Bolivar and Gilchrist, as Tropical Storm Cindy moves closer to the coast.

Tropical Storm Cindy formed in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday, and is expected to make landfall near Sabine Pass early Thursday morning. (Want to get daily updates about traffic news and other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Houston Patch morning newsletter.)

One of the areas that could be affected as the storm moves closer is SR-87, and SR-124, which could become blocked by high tides, close ferry service and trap residents trying to evacuate the island, KTRK reported.

Concrete barriers have been put in place to help block those waters, but those residents who needed to evacuate are encouraged to leave the area now, officials said.
