I-45 Widening Projects Move South Toward Galveston

Segments of I-45 widening are completed with more expected to bid later this year.

GALVESTON, TX — For many who've lived in the Houston area for decades, the Gulf Freeway, it seems has always been under some form of construction or improvement for many years, with much of that just south of downtown and beyond Pasadena.

However, the movement to ease the perpetual state of congestion on Interstate 45 from Galveston Island to Houston is shifting a bit farther south, and finally inching a bit closer to the island. Not because officials with the Texas Department of Transportation are giving up on widening sections of I-45 and Beltway 8, but because that segment is finished, according to a Houston Chronicle report.

The improvement project now stops at Bay Area Blvd in Webster, but plans are underway to start the next leg of widening from NASA Road One to FM 518 with an estimated completion date of December 2021.

Most are hopeful that the expansion will foster significant economic growth, something that has been relatively stagnant in recent years.

"I think it's going to be good for the county because it's going to improve mobility," Galveston County Commissioner Stephen D. Holmes told the Chronicle.
