Injured Man Rescued Off Galveston Coast

Coast Guard is notified when chief engineer on tanker is badly injured by ships anchor chain

GALVESTON, TX -- A man who suffered a broken leg on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Mexico had to be rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard early Thursday.

According to a Coast Guard news release, the 1,092-foot tanker, Ingrid contacted Coast Guard officials at about 6:35 a.m. for medical assistance when the chief engineer suffered a broken leg after being struck with the ships anchor chain.

Coast Guard officials launched helicopter to the area shortly after 8 a.m., and were able to have the man safely hoisted from the tanker at 9 a.m.

He was flown to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and is listed in stable condition.
