Officials Warn Dickinson Residents Of Debris Removal Scams

Scammers tell homeowners city won't be clearing away debris in some areas of city.

DICKINSON, TX — One of the communities hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey is warning residents to be wary of unscrupulous and debris removal companies who may be running a scam.

Some residents have been told by scammers that the city won’t be removing debris in some areas, and they will have to hire their own debris removal service. (Want to get daily news updates and hear about other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Clear Lake Patch morning newsletter.)

City officials took to social media to refute those claims and reassure residents in Dickinson that they are working as quickly as possible to remove the debris from neighborhood streets, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas gulf coast on Aug. 25, about 140 miles west of the Houston-Galveston area, which brought four days of near constant rain to southern parts of the Houston area.

Much of the Dickinson area was flooded with more than half the residents there forced to leave their homes because of severe flooding, and requiring emergency assistance we3eks after the flood waters receded.

The City of Dickinson has contracted with Crowder-Gulf Debris Removal to clear the storm debris.

Officials said Crowder-Gulf is making its first debris collection pass through the city, and kans to make several passes to ensure it’s all cleared.

City officials said residents who wish to hire a debris removal company, can pay for one, but urge residents to check with the city to ensure the company they hire has a city permit.
