Pearland Approves $6.1 Contract for City Hall Renovations

Renovations include new electrical, plumbing and mechanical engineering work as well as upgrades to the elevators, HVAC and security.

PEARLAND, TX -- The Pearland City Council approve a $6.1 million contract that will fund renovations to the city hall complex.

The city of Pearland approved the multi-million dollar renovation plan during the city council meeting on Nov. 14.

The council voted 4-2 to approve the contract with Construction Masters of Houston Inc. to renovate the 51,000-square foot city hall complex, which includes the city hall and the city annex building, which have both stood at least 30 years.

While the council agreed that the city hall renovations were long overdue and would benefit the city and its residents, most were concerned about the associated cost of the project.

“Citizens have put a ton of money into infrastructure. This building is one of those things,” council member Keith Ordeneaux said.

The city has $5.9 million earmarked for the project, with about $4.7 million coming from previously issued certificates of obligation.

The council approved nearly $1.1 million during the Nov. 14 meeting in additional certificates of obligations to cover the funding shortfall.

Council members Tony Carbone and Derrick Reed, who voted against the measure, voted no out of concern for issuing more debt on the taxpayers.

“I have trouble with that,” Carbone said.
