Dallas - As soaring temperatures continue to grip Dallas, the city's Sanitation Department is taking action to combat the impact of intense heat on its employees and equipment. According to Dallas Metro News, city leaders have instituted temporary changes to operational schedules and policies in response to the challenges posed by waste collection – an industry that demands strenuous manual labor even in optimal conditions.

"About half of our collections, call it garbage and recycling collections, in the City of Dallas are done with manual labor using rear load collection trucks," said Clifton Gillespie, Director of Sanitation for the City of Dallas, to CBS News Texas.

These challenges are magnified by the high number of households each sanitation route serves, often spanning 500 to 1000 homes. The summer heat adds further pressure, making the demands of the job even more hazardous.

In response, Gillespie and the Sanitation Department have rolled out a series of adaptive measures to help protect workers from the heat's dangerous effects. The department considers the safety and well-being of its workforce a top priority, and the recent adjustments to scheduling and policy underscore the city's dedication to protecting those who work tirelessly in waste collection.

"So we did launch our own internal departmental summer safety campaign in late May and early June, formalizing the process that we normally go through with our employees, just to bring a sense of awareness and a really a sense of urgency to the issue of summer safety," he said.

In response to the extreme heat, the Dallas Sanitation Department has introduced several measures to support its workers. The department has issued alternative summer uniforms, which include lightweight t-shirts, bucket hats, and cooling towels. Crews are also provided with bags of ice and electrolyte drink powders daily or as needed.

Temporary employees, who usually work on the backs of collection vehicles, are now allowed to occasionally ride inside the truck cabs for respite from the heat. In addition, the number of authorized rest breaks has been increased from two to four during the summer to help workers recover from heat exposure.

The heat, however, is affecting more than just the department's workforce. Several sanitation trucks have overheated and have been taken out of service due to the high temperatures. Consequently, the department has chosen to delay recycling pickup by a day in some cases.

Sanitation Director Clifton Gillespie encourages residents to stay up-to-date on any changes to sanitation services. He suggests subscribing to service advisories on the department's website or downloading the Dallas Sanitation mobile app. By staying informed, residents can adjust their waste disposal practices to accommodate any temporary changes in collection schedules.
