Fort Worth Schools Featured in National Study

Study Finds Large Print Books Improve Student Reading Confidence and Comprehension Skills

Six schools in Fort Worth ISD are being highlighted as literacy leaders in a newly published nationwide study.

Local participants include: Applied Learning Academy, Richard J Wilson Elementary, Woodway Elementary, Young Men’s Leadership Academy, Young Women’s Leadership Academy and South Hills High School.

The study investigates the impact of students in grades 3-12 reading large print books. The study found that large print books benefit all readers – not just older adults and readers with a visual impairment.

A few notable findings include:

  • Students’ mindsets about their own reading capacities changed for the better after reading large print books.
  • Teachers attribute the use of large print books to helping students develop stronger reading skills.
  • Access to large print books increases confidence levels of striving readers, such as English language learners and students with learning disorders.
