Fort Worth Woman’s Childhood Dream Comes True When She Moves into Overture River District
When we are young, we all have dreams about what we hope to achieve one day. Beverly Johnson has achieved hers

(Fort Worth, TX) – When we are young, we all have dreams about what we hope to achieve one day. “All my life I had wanted to be in a tree overlooking the water. That’s all I ever wanted to do,” said Beverly Johnson, 85, of Fort Worth, Texas.
Johnson had come close to realizing her vision when she moved into a three-bedroom house on the west side of Fort Worth. “It had big trees in the backyard,” she said. But there was no water nearby.
Johnson is a widow and had been living on her own for some time. “I had one good friend in the neighborhood, four church friends and a dog. I was happy,” said Johnson.

But not as happy as she could be. According to a study done on aging by the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) in collaboration with National Geographic Partners, happiness in old age is “bolstered by a focus on quality of life, the importance of relationships and independence.”
For years, Johnson had resisted her children’s suggestion that she right size and move into a community with people closer to her own age who could become new friends. Eventually, she gave in and agreed to take a look.

When she got to Overture River District, a 55+ active adult community that was just 20 minutes away from where she had been living, she didn’t have any expectations. However, after telling the rental specialist about her childhood dream, that all changed.
“After touring an apartment on the third floor, we walked out on the balcony and the view took my breath away,” said Johnson. “We were at tree top level overlooking the Trinity River. I looked at my daughter and I said, ‘We’re putting the house up for sale.’ She was thrilled.”
Right away, Johnson began the task of thinning out her belongings. Moving from a three-bedroom house to a one-bedroom apartment required some deliberate work, but Johnson was ready.
She went from room to room, systematically placing the items she absolutely wanted to keep in the center of each room, then as things began piling up brought them out to the garage and laid them out on tables to be packed up.
She began the task in the room that had become her painting studio. “I am an award-winning watercolorist and had paintings all over the walls, containers filled with painting supplies and lots of art books,” she said. “I kept the items I felt most attached to, and left everything else behind to either be sold, donated or thrown away.”
Johnson moved to Overture River District on September 1, 2023. “The day I moved in there were two others moving in,” said Johnson, who quickly learned she had a lot in common with one of her new neighbors. Both she and Nancy were retired nurses.
“Nancy and I are now friends that are almost like sisters we didn’t know we had,” said Johnson, who also considers several dozen of her other neighbors to be good friends.
“I enjoy going to many of the educational events brought into the community, and try not to miss the meal functions,” she said. Recent events Johnson particularly enjoyed included a lesson on wine pairings, one on financial planning and budgeting, and another on travel.
She also feels inspired to stay active. “A few days a week I make a point of walking around the entire building, and when it’s warm out, I participate in water aerobics,” she said, adding that another plus about living at Overture River District is the sense of security she has.
“I sleep so well here. I am behind a locked gate, in a locked building and have two beautiful deadbolts on the door. Because I am on the third floor, I can leave my windows open all night long and enjoy the fresh air. It’s perfect. It’s exactly what I wanted. I just love this place. That’s all I can say. I love it,” said Johnson.
