Here's How Walmart Plans To Improve Your Shopping Experience

Walmart's 'Scan & Go' mobile app allows shoppers to bypass checkout lines. It's already available in some Dallas-area stores.

DALLAS, TX — The Walmart experience could soon change for shoppers in certain Dallas-area stores as the grocery giant rolls out new technology that would allow customers to avoid the checkout line. In a blog post Tuesday, the company announced that more than 100 stores across 33 states will get a chance to try out the new Mobile Express Scan & Go service.

The service comes to shoppers through a mobile app — available to both Android and iPhone users. Shoppers simply scan the barcodes on items they plan to purchase using their smartphone camera. The technology enables shoppers to pay for their goods from their phone, allowing them to bypass cashiers all together. Walmart said it "securely stores" credit and debit card information.

The Scan & Go service is already available at every Sam's Club store in the United States. As an added benefit, it allows shoppers to see the price of individual items along with a running total. Walmart says this tool will be helpful to those looking to stay on a budget.

For security reasons, customers will still be required to pass through a Mobile Express lane, where an employee will zap their mobile receipt. And voila! Off to the car to battle rude drivers in the parking lot.

"Scan & Go is one of many options we're testing to give our customers the shopping experience they are looking for," Walmart communications staffer Justin Rushing said in the post."We continue to listen, test and learn – all to give our customers more options to shop how they want while also helping them save time," Rushing said.

Kiosks have been installed at some Walmart stores so shoppers can pick up handheld devices and test out the service for themselves before downloading the app.

Scan & Go is currently being tested in a few areas, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Orlando and northwest Arkansas. When customers launch the app, it automatically lists participating stores nearby.

Patch has reached out to Walmart several times to find out which new stores will feature the new technology and will update when we hear back.
