Local Dog Needs Your Vote for Humane Society: Three Days Left!

Help this underdog take the lead! Vote each day through June 30 to help Pluto win donated beds for the Humane Society of North Texas.

Not long after North Richland Hills residents Victoria and Hunter Nelson arrived to take new jobs in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex in 2014, the newlyweds bought a new home and began to acquire furnishings.

But it was all too perfect.

Something was sorely missing: Barking, veterinary bills, misbehavior, chewed furniture legs and occasional accidents on new, deep pile rugs, for example.

To fill the void, they made the next move to adopt a stray black mixed breed pup from the nearby Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT). The Humane Society had found the puppy only days earlier, roaming the streets of Fort Worth, scared and hungry.

It was love at first sight. And out of pity for the demoted planet Pluto and love of the Disney character, Victoria and Hunter named their new family member accordingly.

Moved by the adoption experience, Victoria soon enough signed up to volunteer at HSNT. She didn’t need the Hubble Space Telescope to see the need for responsible rescue, quality temporary care and placement for animals that the organization provides to North Texans.

Today, Pluto brings joy to the Nelson home, whether he’s awake or not. By day, noise from the refrigerator ice maker beckons Pluto for a favorite but rather odd snack, an ice cube or two he chews to pieces within seconds. By night, or whenever he’s sleeping which is often throughout the day, Pluto dreams, snorting, barking or kicking unconsciously in his slumber.

It’s only natural that the subject of sleep motivated Pluto to track down the local Keller location of HSNT on the final leg of his June campaign trail to win the election for Dog of the Month as awarded by national pet bed manufacturer, Kuranda Dog Beds.

Victoria shares that, while still subject to further interpretation, one of Pluto's dreams is that all doggies enjoy ample cozy beds in forever homes. But what about the reality that too many of his fellow local dogs await real homes with real beds?

The latest election numbers show Pluto as underdog in a tight race to win five durable and comfortable Kuranda Beds for HSNT dogs, running behind by about 400 votes to a Michigan dog.

Whether or not they are dog lovers, readers can vote once a day through June 30 at https://kuranda.com/dog-of-the-month/entry/3493. Voting is free and easy.

What dog could have dreamt Pluto’s odyssey from the lonely, back streets of greater Fort Worth to becoming a leading candidate for Kuranda Dog of the Month with a chance to win glory - and deluxe bedding - for his fellow canines at the Humane Society of North Texas?

Thank you for your help! Together we can bring home a win for Texas.
