Funeral Services Set For Slain Texas Trooper Damon Allen

Mourners can pay respect to Allen and his family on Friday, Dec. 1 at Mexia High School.

Funeral arrangements were announced Friday for the state trooper, husband and father of three who was gunned down during a traffic stop in Freestone County on Thanksgiving. Mourners can pay respects to Damon Allen, 41, next Friday.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home (located at 900 U.S. Highway 84, Teague, TX 75860). Funeral Services will be held on Friday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. at the Mexia High School football stadium (located at approximately 1100 North Bailey St., Mexia, TX 76667, just south of the junior high school). Interment will follow at the Salem Cemetery in Freestone County (located on County Road 731 south of Teague).

Allen was killed while on duty on Thanksgiving while working a traffic stop in Freestone County. Police say the suspect got out of his car and fired at Allen multiple times, killing him at the scene.

The incident took place in Fairfield, about 90 miles south of Dallas, but the suspect, 32-year-old Dabrett Black, was arrested northwest of Houston after a manhunt. The suspect is being held in Brazos County on charges of capital murder of a law enforcement officer, but a bond amount has not yet been set, NBC DFW reports.

Governor Greg Abbott ordered Friday that flags at Texas DPS facilities be lowered to half-staff in honor of Allen.

"The tragic death of Trooper Damon Allen is a sad and sobering reminder of the risks our men and women in uniform take every day," Abbott said. "Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. As flags are lowered, I call on all Texans to join me in prayer for Trooper Allen and the entire law enforcement community who keep us safe."

Allen is survived by his wife, Kasey, three daughters and one son, FOX 4 reports.

Texas Department of Public safety reports Allen is the 221st Department of Public Safety officer to die in the line of duty since 1823, and the first Trooper to die in a shooting incident since 2008.
