Tech Product Enables Memorialization of Every Soldier on Veterans Day

Jennifer Blakeley Creates 'Life's QR Code' to Preserve Veterans' Stories and Family Histories Forever

For those who bore the burden of military service, their time under arms is one of the most formative experiences in a veteran’s life. And for those who lost their lives in battle, their heroism is remembered by loved ones and friends. As hard as we might try, however, the memories and highlights of a veteran’s service will fade away, along with the photographs, letters, and stories of their time in uniform.

A new company has created a place online where, for a nominal one-time fee, family, friends, or former unit members can create a space to memorialize both the veteran’s service and their life, including pictures and video. That space is connected to a QR coded weatherproof ceramic tile which can be affixed to a gravestone or other common spot where it can be scanned with a smartphone. That scan brings up a tribute page online that contains the information, stories, photos, and video on the life of the departed. The hosting of this page lasts forever and is covered in perpetuity by the upfront payment.

The name of the new company is Life’s QR, founded by Jennifer Blakeley, a highly successful female entrepreneur and photographer who came up with the concept after a walk in a cemetery one day. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Blakeley noticed the resurgence of QR code usage and thought, “Why is there not a QR code on this headstone that I can scan and quickly see who this is?” She shared her idea with her husband, Sam Blakeley, who is an applications developer, and together they created Life’s QR in early 2023.
