Texas Winter Weather: Ice, Snow Expected In Dallas, Austin

Forecasters do not expect this storm to approach the severity of last February's winter emergency that strained the Texas power grid.

TEXAS — A winter storm spanning several states is expected to bring significant ice accumulation across Texas, including in the Dallas and Houston areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Large parts of north, central and west Texas are under winter storm warnings through Thursday, though forecasters at the National Weather Service are not expecting this event to approach the severity of last February's winter storm that caused millions of Texans to go without power for days and resulted in the deaths of over 200 people.

Rain in the evening is expected to turn into freezing rain late Wednesday and overnight into Thursday morning.

A stretch from the Dallas-Fort Worth area down to Austin and the Texas Hill Country is forecasted to get anywhere from small amounts to a quarter-inch of ice.

People in the warning areas are encouraged not to travel during the weather event and to prepare for power outages with essentials such as water, nonperishable food and batteries, according to the National Weather Service.
