6th Street Shooter Still At Large In Austin (Video)
Despite a robust police presence each weekend along the entertainment corridor, suspect eluded capture and police seek public's help.
AUSTIN, TX — No arrests have been made in this weekend's shooting along 6th Street in downtown Austin that left two people with serious injuries.
At a Monday afternoon press conference — marking the first time police have spoken out on the early Sunday shooting — Lt. Jeff Greenwalt said police continue to follow up on leads in their search for a suspect. Some witnesses have described a thin black man with dread locks as a possible suspect, Greenwalt said.
Emergency officials descended outside of the Terminal 6 bar, 302 E. 6th St., amid reports of gunshots. After arriving to the scene just before 2:30 a.m., Austin-Travis County EMS medics transported two adults to hospitals for medical treatment. Greenwalt said both victims sustained serious injuries, but the woman who was shot has since been released from the hospital while a male victim continues to be hospitalized.

Greenwalt noted "dozens" of officers arrived in quick order given the heavy police presence typically stationed along the popular entertainment corridor each weekend. Despite the robust police presence and the multitude of surveillance cameras along the stretch of roadway, the suspect managed to elude capture.

The lieutenant said police were scouring through surveillance camera footage as well as video taken by witnesses (some of which has been shared on social media) in their attempts to identify the shooter. Greenwalt declined to provide further details, including the ages of the victims, where they are from, if they are acquaintances and where they were shot. The circumstances that led up to the shooting also are unknown.
Police ask any witnesses to the shooting to come forward to alert police to any information or video footage they might have. While medics at the scene identified Terminal 6 as the source of the shooting, Greenwalt said it's unclear where the shots came from even though the violence occurred directly in front of that club, which has been visited by violence in the past.
Last August, rapper Aquantis Jaymond Grifin, 21, was fatally shot in a hail of bullets fired by eight officers behind Terminal 6. Police later said they responded to gunshots at around 1 a.m. before confronting the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rapper in an alley behind the bar where he had previously performed. He was shot after police allege he charged at one of the officers while clutching a firearm.
