AUSTIN, TX — Austin Community College will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with its 12th annual Díez y Seis event next week.
The commemoration is scheduled on Monday, Sept. 16, from noon to 1 p.m. at Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Rd. Former Texas Senator Gonzalo Barrientos, who served in the Texas legislature from 1975 to 2007, will serve as special guest speaker, ACC officials said in a press advisory.
“We hope to inspire many young Latinos to participate in local, state, and national politics,” Peck Young, ACC Center for Public Policy & Political Studies (CPPPS) director, said in a prepared statement. “This event offers an opportunity to connect with the college and community and reflect on our rich history.”

The cultural celebration commemorates Mexico’s declaration of independence and Texas’ first Independence Day. Through historical narratives, guests will learn about the bi-national ties that shaped the economy, politics, and traditions of Texas.
As part of the celebration, students and guests will enjoy traditional food, live music from Johnny Degollado y su Conjunto, and performances from Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico. The event, presented by the ACC Center for Public Policy & Political Studies, is free and open to the public.
