Here are the top stories today in Austin:

1) Austin's population continues to surge while AISD's enrollment numbers continue to decline. Enrollment in Austin ISD has fallen 14 percent over the past 10 years. Meanwhile, several other surrounding districts are seeing surges in the number of students.

Katie Casstevens, student enrollment and attendance interim executive director at AISD, says: "A lot of families can't continue to afford to live in the city, so we're seeing some families move into some of the surroundings of our communities." KXAN has more on this story here.

2) The 8th annual Parade of India commemorates India's Independence Day on the steps of the Texas State Capitol. On Saturday, the community gathered at the annual parade to dance, sing, and celebrate India's Independence Day. The Austin American-Statesman was on the scene to capture photos – check them out here.

3) The Associate Commissioner for Child Protective Investigations resigns after less than a year. Texas' Associate Commissioner Robert "Rich" Richman's brief tenure at the embattled agency was marked by two major headlines — a botched investigation into alleged sex trafficking at a foster care facility and Gov. Greg Abbott's directive to investigate parents of trans teenagers.

The Texas Tribune reports that his resignation letter stated that he is leaving the Department of Family and Protective Services to "pursue an opportunity to continue my law enforcement career." The Texas Tribune has more on this story here.

4) Want to keep our community beautiful? Registration is officially open for the 28th annual Lake Travis Cleanup. The cleanup will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11. KVUE reports that the most recent lake cleanup was held in April, during which more than 350 volunteers removed 423 bags of trash from the lake, as well as many large pieces of Styrofoam and wood. Learn more about how you can participate here at KVUE.
