Here are the top stories today in Austin:
1) Austin ISD's new police chief shares new security protocols for the upcoming school year. AISD's new police chief, Wayne Sneed, details new plans for monitoring social media accounts, conducting security audits, upgrading campus locks and fences, and installing bullet-resistant film in entryways and doors at AISD campuses. 2) Swimming is officially suspended at Blue Hole Regional Park through Aug. 15. Beloved summer destination, Blue Hole, has temporarily banned swimming due to heightened bacteria levels and poor visibility in the water. Wimberley city officials warned they're unsure whether they'll have to outright cancel the remainder of the swimming season for the year. KXAN has more on this story here.
3) Local gas prices drop 15 cents per gallon. As gas prices continue to drop, prices in Austin are 77.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago but also stand 92.4 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. GasBuddy reports that the national average price of diesel has declined 14.8 cents in the last week and stands at $5.27 per gallon. Check out the full story here at KLBJ.
4) Texas man who stormed the U.S. Capitol with a gun gets 87 months in prison. Guy Wesley Reffitt, 49, of Wylie, Texas, was sentenced on Monday to 87 months in prison on civil disorder, obstruction of justice, and other charges for his actions before, during, and after the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Reffitt has received the longest sentence imposed so far among hundreds of Capitol riot cases. Learn more here at CBS Austin.
