Today's riddle: What do evil hens lay? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. 'Everything is changing day-to-day': Austin ISD begins classes amid uncertainty (statesman.com) — Austin ISD students returned to class Tuesday amid school closures, $205 million in budget cuts, and the looming possibility of a state takeover that could replace local trustees. Families are adjusting to shuttered campuses, larger classes, and new high school bus hubs that push many teens onto longer walks along busy roads. District leaders say the changes are meant to stabilize finances and refocus on student achievement, but some parents are weighing leaving the district.
2. Man accused of peering into West Campus windows arrested, UTPD says (cbsaustin.com) — Austin police and UT police say a man suspected of repeatedly peering into apartment windows in the West Campus area has been arrested and booked into Travis County Jail. Officers tied him to several early-August reports near San Gabriel and West 21st–23rd streets, after earlier safety alerts urged residents to secure homes and report suspicious behavior. Authorities still encourage West Campus residents to stay vigilant and call 911 if they see anything concerning.
3. Travis County DA says disputed evidence in APD officer case was disclosed in 2024 (cbsaustin.com) — Travis County prosecutors say they disclosed a key email in the case against Austin police Officer Chance Bretches back in May 2024, countering defense claims it was hidden in recent discovery. The dispute centers on evidence handling in an aggravated assault case tied to Austin's 2020 downtown protests, as the DA's office insists it met its obligations and says the community is ready for trial.
4. Fantastic Fest 2026 Lineup (horrorbuzz.com) — Fantastic Fest returns to Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin from September 17–24, bringing dozens of world, U.S., and North American premieres to local genre-film fans. The 2026 lineup features a gala screening of the new Resident Evil, creature features like Beware Boiúna and The Swallow, restorations of cult horror classics, and a deep slate of international debuts. Limited badges remain for those wanting in on the discoveries.
5. Tesla's Cybercab Launch Approaches Amid Safety Concerns and Data Challenges (famedelivered.com subscription) — Tesla is preparing to launch its fully driverless Cybercab in Austin as soon as this month, with local first responders already trained for potential emergencies. While the rollout could put Austin at the center of autonomous ride services, federal safety investigations, data limitations, and regulatory hurdles still cloud how quickly and widely these vehicles will operate on city streets.
