📰 News we're reading

• Austin ISD's budget deficit grows to $105 million (austincurrent.org) — Austin ISD closed the 2025-26 school year with a $105 million deficit, despite already cutting $205 million and planning to borrow $140 million this fall to cover operations. Trustees are bracing for more cuts, debating state scrutiny of staffing levels, and counting on a delayed $17 million school property sale to slightly bolster reserves while trying to protect classrooms.

• Austin City Council unanimously moves forward with new data center regulations (cbsaustin.com) — Austin City Council has unanimously kicked off writing strict new rules for data centers, including potentially banning the largest facilities within city limits to protect water and power resources. Staff must return by late 2026 with binding regulations defining what types and sizes of centers can operate, as the city balances tech growth with climate and equity goals.

• Austin home prices fall 1.4% in July, but property tax relief may not follow (cbsaustin.com) — Austin home prices slipped 1.4% in July, but residents still face higher property taxes after City Council approved a 3.5% hike and fee increases that could add more than $350 next year. Officials warn that despite a buyer's market, overall affordability remains strained, and voters will also weigh a $295 million parks and recreation bond this November.
