Here are the top stories today in Austin:

  1. On Thursday, June 23, Arch Manning, "nephew of former NFL quarterback and Hall of Famer Peyton Manning," announced via Twitter that he will be playing football at the University of Texas (UT). His decision was made a week after his recent "official visit to Texas." Manning, who "plays quarterback at Isidore Newman in New Orleans, is the top-rated high school football player in the 247Sports composite recruiting rankings." More at: (Patch)
  2. The Austin Public Works Department has started "seasonal street maintenance" in Austin neighborhoods, "with a focus on hundreds of lane miles of neighborhood streets." The maintenance involves applying sealcoat, which is "a process involving spraying a layer of oil and spreading an asphalt material on top." Before maintenance begins, city "crews will notify residents in advance" and will "ask vehicles to be temporarily removed from the street." If they're not removed, "they will be towed to a nearby street." More at: (newsradioklbj.com)
  3. A new bar called Day Dreamer will open "sometime later this summer" at 1708 East Sixth St. in Austin. The venue will feature "classic and house cocktails" prepared with a "Crawler Champion Shaker, which is operated through a hand-cranker." The new venue's team also operates the "neighborhood wine restaurant Birdie's, East Austin patio cocktail spot Kitty Cohen's, honky-tonk dive bar the White Horse, East Austin retro bar High Noon, and East Riverside bar Frazier's." 5. On Friday, July 1, the nonprofit 1001 Diverse Books will host The Austin Book Flood event at Bernice Hart Elementary School, located at 8301 Furness Drive. The nonprofit, in partnership with Bookspring, will give out "children's books 'Maya's Blanket' and 'Nour's Secret Library' to all children participating in The Andy Roddick Foundation's Summer Camp." The purpose of the event is to make the community aware that "books shouldn't be a privilege. Accessibility to books is a key determining factor in future literacy outcomes, which ultimately correlates to long-term economic success. Making books available to a young child can change the course of his/her life." For more information visit: (1001 Diverse Books)

Are you an Austin resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Austin Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
