Here are the top stories in Austin today:

1) Austin is reportedly the top metro in the U.S. for job creation right now. Workforce Solutions tells KVUE that job creation in the Austin area increased by 16 percent from 2016 to 2021, while the national average increased by 1.8 percent. Workforce Solutions reports healthy growth across industries like health care, information technology, manufacturing, and construction. Many of these industries include roles that do not require college degrees — merely short-term credentials! Head to KVUE to learn more.

2) HAAM Day is BACK with its first in-person event in three years! The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) Day is set to take place today, Tuesday, Sept. 13, and benefits low-income and working musicians in our community. HAAM provides access to affordable health care for Greater Austin's low-income, working musicians, with a focus on prevention and wellness.

The event kicked off this morning bright and early with a speech from Mayor Steve Adler at Moody Amphitheater and will continue throughout the greater Austin area for the rest of the day. Head to HAAM's website to see today's full lineup and learn how you can support our incredible, creative community.

3) APD reports that a teenager hit a pedestrian in North Austin and left the area. A 17 year old has been arrested and charged after hitting a wheelchair-bound pedestrian on Saturday, Sept. 3. FOX 7 reports that the pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital by EMS.

Avila-Banagas was taken to the Travis County Jail on Sept. 9 where he was charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid, Injury to a Disabled Person, Unlawful Carry of a Weapon, and Failure to Identify in Relation to this case. Head to FOX 7 Austin for more on this story.

4) Austin housing market cools down enough for young, first-time homebuyers? Austin real estate professionals report that now is prime time in Austin for minimal homebuying competition.

Austin Board of Realtors President-Elect Ashley Jackson said, "The market is slower than we have seen in a few years and there's more inventory, more homes to choose from. So, what this means for a buyer is that they face less competition as they're shopping for a house." CBS Austin has the full story here.

5) UT's West Campus is finally being made brighter and safer! Austin Energy overhauled lighting in the area to eliminate dark areas that were crime hot spots. Problems ranged from cell phones getting ripped out of hands to even students being attacked. The improvements include: 600 streetlamps were retrofitted to use brighter LED bulbs, broken light fixtures were repaired, 15 new streetlamps were installed, and trees were trimmed to raise canopies and allow for better illumination of the sidewalks below.
