Hey, neighbors! It's me again, Gabriela Couvillion, your host of the Austin Daily.

First, today's weather:

A thunderstorm in spots. High: 87 Low: 73.

Here are the top stories today in Austin:

  1. Austin CEO Elon Musk has been named the world's richest person. Musk, Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder, is worth $246 billion dollars! "Born in South Africa to a Canadian mother and a South African father, he eventually migrated to Canada and then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania. After receiving acceptance for Stanford University's doctoral program for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), he dropped out after two days" and "the rest is history!" Musk also owns Austin-based Tesla, Inc. whose mission includes accelerating "the world's access to energy-efficient transportation." According to Forbes, Musk is 50 years old and has 7 children. 2. On Sunday, May 1, "more than 1,900 runners" participated in the "2022 H-E-B Austin Sunshine Run. The race which "benefits Austin Sunshine Camps, which sends kids who are on free or reduced-price meals at school to camp for free, had not been held since 2019 due to COVID-19. 3. The Mexican Cinco de Mayo celebration is coming up, and although it's "widely celebrated in Mexican restaurants around the city, there are a variety of other restaurants and pubs that participate in the festivities by giving excellent food and drink deals!" For a list of "food and drink promotions" in Austin, "as well as restaurant specials and discounts," visit: (The Austinot)
  4. Former Austin-American Statesman food writers, Kitty Crider and Addie Broyles recently donated "boxes of books they collected over the years" to "the Cookbook Cafe, the cookbook-centric restaurant on the first floor of the Central Library downtown. Mississippi native Crider, now retired, "ran the food section of the American-Statesman, where she covered the city's rapidly changing food community from 1979 to her retirement in 2008." She said, "that's when I picked up where she left off as the newspaper's food writer, upholding many of her traditions and creating my own. Listen to Crider's oral history interview to the Southern Foodways Alliance in 2018. Addie Broyles, who is now writing about life as a millennial mom at thefeministkitchen.com, can be reached at broylesa@gmail.com and you can read the whole article which was written by her at: (austin360)
  5. "'Walk A Mile in Her Shoes,' an international men's march held in an effort to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence," took place on Saturday, April 30 at Blue Suede Shoes on South 1st Street. The money raised was "to benefit SAFE Alliance Austin, a group dedicated to stopping abuse for everyone by helping survivors of different types of abuse." During the event, participants walked "in high heels for a mile to raise funds and awareness about the causes, effects and remediation to men's sexualized violence." Natalie Turman, social media manager for Storybuilt and an event host, said, "A lot of victims don't want to come forward but us showing them that safe space and us creating that safe space is super useful and so it's able to help the unsung or the unheard feel like their voice is being heard whether they speak on it or not."
