Austin Community College Schedules Manufacturing Jobs Open House
More than 250 have already signed up to attend ACC event aimed at introducing prospective job seekers to in-demand industry.
AUSTIN, TX — More than 250 people already have registered for the Skill-up: Manufacturing Open House scheduled on Saturday aimed at finding people good manufacturing jobs, Austin Community College officials said Friday.
The school is doing its part in tackling a critical manufacturing workforce gap by staging its open house, designed to educate participants to the more than 57,000 manufacturing jobs currently available in Central Texas today — many requiring merely an associate degree or certificate — in one of the most in-demand industries.
Potential careers in the field include building and maintaining equipment, such as sensors, automation, and electronics that are shipped all over the world, officials noted. Skilled workers can earn up to $75,000 a year, ACC officials added.

The open house is scheduled on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Riverside Campus, Frank Squires Building, 1020 Grove Blvd.
“As technology continues to advance, we are seeing a lack of advanced manufacturers to fill these roles, leading to a workforce shortage,” Richard Rhodes, Austin president/CEO, said in a prepared statement. “ACC is a regional resource, and we remain dedicated to bridging the gap for students to get a good career and employers to fill the positions they need.”

Added Laura Marmalejo, ACC Manufacturing department chair: “We want to show the community where you will start and where you can end up with a career in manufacturing . The industry is changing, and the need for skilled workers with higher education is growing.”
At ACC, students can train in four key manufacturing industries including Engineering
Technology, Architectural and Engineering Computer Aided Design, Welding Technology, and Logistics and Global Supply Chain Management.
Hosted in partnership with the Austin Regional Manufacturers Association (ARMA), the Skill-Up open house features live demonstrations, tours of ACC’s training facilities, and an opportunity to meet employers who are looking to hire.
“Austin is seen as a music and software town, but it’s a manufacturing town. One-third of the major employers are manufacturers, and they need to hire a lot of people,” Ed Laskin, ARMA executive director, said in a prepared statement. “Austin is the 15th city in the nation for manufacturing output. There are great-paying jobs that are a blend of technical and engineering jobs that require advanced skills.”
