Austin Council Mulls Police Academy Action Amid Racism Complaints
Council members are scheduled to vote on a resolution that would delay new cadet training until fall 2020 as investigation proceeds.
AUSTIN, TX — Austin City Council members this week will vote on a resolution designed to delay police cadet classes amid an investigation into allegations of systemic racism within the force, according to reports.
Passage of the resolution would put a hold on further police cadet classes until fall 2020, according to the Austin American-Statesman. A probe into the police academy was launched after complaints were received accusing former Austin Police Department Assistant Chief Justin Newsom of liberally using racist language.
The complaints prompted Newsom to formally retire. He later issued a statement in which he acknowledged long using racist language, and issued a public apology for his behavior.

City Manager Spencer Cronk confirmed the start of an independent investigation into the allegations. The city action is designed to direct Cronk to conduct a broader investigation and perform an audit of the police department to assess the extent of racism, bigotry and discrimination within the police force, the Statesman reported.

The accusations have rocked the police force, and prompted widespread consternation. Austin police union President Ken Casaday organized a press conference expressing gratitude for the investigation but urging continued hiring of new cadets even as the investigation was underway.
During the press conference, Casaday noted the force is short some 170 officers. There are 1,739 officers from the allowed level of 1,959 — a shortage that is demoralizing the rank and file while putting the public in danger, Casaday noted.
