Austin Has 4 ZIP Codes With Highest Baby Boomer Growth In U.S.

RENTCafé researchers found no less than 8 Texas ZIP codes among the top 20 nationwide with biggest rise of the segment, half in Austin.

AUSTIN, TX — Eight Texas ZIP codes are among those seeing the most significant rise in baby boomers in the U.S. — four of them in Austin, including one with the second-highest jump in the entire country, a new study found.

RENTCafé, a nationwide internet listing service for renters, scoured U.S. Census data to uncover the most trending baby boomer ZIP codes across the U.S. and at state level. Researchers found the Lone Star State has no fewer than eight ZIP codes in the spotlight, out of the 20 areas with the most significant rise in baby boomers in the U.S., between 2012-2017.

Baby boomers are people born in the years following World War II, when there was a temporary spike in the birth rate. Four Austin ZIP codes were among those seeing the most growth in the segment:

  • Austin’s 78754 saw the second largest increase in the U.S., with an impressive 74 percent jump in number of boomers in just five years.
  • The quiet, wide open area of ZIP code 78747 saw a 50 percent increase.
  • 78701 overlapping downtown Austin experienced a 47 percent rise in baby boomers.
  • The ZIP code 78732 in the western portion of the city experienced a 35 percent rise.
  • Austin’s 78734 is the ZIP code with the largest share of baby boomers at 26 percent. It falls just below the line, on the 21st position at U.S. level.

The following chart shows the cities with the biggest baby boomer populations. Austin distinguished itself in terms of increases among the segment, but didn't make the list with the greatest numbers. El Paso, Houston and Grand Prairie made the top 20 list, with 15,784, 14,806 and 14,100 respectively.
