Austin Mom Gives Birth During Son's Awards Ceremony
A doctor advised the pregnant woman she could give birth at any time, but little did anyone know how prescient his words would be.
AUSTIN, TX — An Austin mom attending an awards ceremony honoring her son left the event with another child after giving birth at the elementary school last week.
According to media reports, Carina Soto-Rodriguez and her husband were attending Wednesday's ceremony at IDEA Bluff Springs, where their son was being honored for his reading and math proficiency, CNN and other media outlets reported. Pregnant at the time, the woman had been told by her doctor before the event that she could give birth at any moment, according to the report.
The doctor's prescience was realized when the woman excused herself to go to the ladies' room, where she ended up giving birth to a healthy baby girl. As the father frantically called 911, teachers Amberlynn Balli, Valentina Davalos and Erica Beverly rushed to help the mom while following instructions by medics on the phone who were en route, according to reports.

The delivery reportedly took all of 10 minutes. "I just took the phone and opened the door and approached the stall, and there was mom with the brand-new baby," Balli told CNN.
It all happened quickly, the teachers reported. The couple's son, who was among second-graders being honored that day, was confused for a time before basking in the glow of becoming a brother, as CNN reported.

The mom and baby reportedly are doing fine. What's more, officials at IDEA Public Schools — a network of 96 public charter schools across Texas and Louisiana serving students from prekindergarten through high school — have pledged to give the young lady a college scholarship when she graduates from one of her schools, CNN reported.
