Austin Police Kept Busy With 2 Concurrent SWAT Calls (Updated)

One day after spending 7 hours in a standoff with a resident, officers dispatched to separate incidents — one an illegal game parlor.

AUSTIN, TX — Austin police have dispatched SWAT teams to two separate incidents in the area, according to reports on Wednesday.

The first incident began just after 8 a.m. along the 9500 block of Burnet Road. Calls to police indicated shots had been fired at the location, police said, and the situation led to the detention of 13 people at what was described as an illegal gaming room.

Sgt. David Daniels later told reporters the site of the operation was an illegal gaming room. While those detained cooperated with police, one individual opted to barricade himself in the building —prompting the work of a SWAT team, Daniels said.

But because the Austin Police Department was busy with the other SWAT-related call, local officers had to avail themselves of the Texas Department of Public Safety's specialized unit, Daniels said.

The officer said the man who had barricaded himself ultimately exited the building and was arrested without incident.

Concurrently, police responded to the 1200 block of Texas 71 where they were called to assist other law enforcement officials serve a warrant at what is believed to be a mobile home park. That situation, too, devolved into a SWAT scenario.

The location off Texas 71 is located some 53 miles away from Austin Police Department headquarters at 715 E. 8th St., southeast of the cop shop. Patch is still awaiting to hear details on that incident, and will update this story when more information is shared.

The incidents come a day after SWAT teams spent nearly 7 hours on Tuesday trying to coax a barricaded man to exit his North Austin dwelling along the 6400 block of Adair Drive. The man's wife had called police to alert that he was in the throes of a "mental episode" while threatening to harm himself. The incident ended peacefully late Tuesday night after the man fled the home and was detained at a nearby field.
