Austin Police ID First Fatal Crash Victim Of 2020

An elderly driver veered off her lane on Jan. 4 before striking a concrete median along Interstate 35, and died a short time later.

AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday identified the person who died in the first fatal collision of 2020.

The incident occurred along a stretch of South Interstate 35 between the 3000-3500 block of the artery on Saturday, Jan. 4, just before 8:30 p.m. Police said a 2007, gray Toyota Camry was traveling southbound when the vehicle veered left of the lane for unknown reasons before striking a concrete barrier dividing the southbound and northbound lanes.

The driver was rushed to St. David's South Austin Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries as short time after being admitted. The crash victim was identified as 72-year-old Mary Gonzales-Limas. According to her birth date provided by police, the woman would have turned 74 five days after her death on Thursday, Jan. 9.

The incident was the first fatal traffic crash in Austin this year, police said. No traffic fatalities were recorded in the comparable period last year, police added.
