Austin Traffic Alert: Bridge Opening To Prompt Detours
The Stassney Lane bridge over Interstate 35 is set to open on Wednesday morning, prompting traffic diversion and lane closures.
AUSTIN, TX — State transportation officials plan to open the newly built Stassney Lane bridge over Interstate on Wednesday morning, a move that will prompt a traffic shift and related lane closures.
The Texas Department of Transportation announced plans to open the new link that is six lanes wide with a pair of through lanes and a left-turn lane in each direction. To that end, crews will shift vehicles onto the new bridge starting at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, officials said in a press advisory.
During the traffic switch, officials added, there will be several lane closures on the north and southbound I-35 frontage road near the Stassney Lane and I-35 intersection, as well as east and westbound lane closures on the Stassney Lane bridge. The U-turn bridges will also be temporarily closed during this traffic switch, officials noted.

Given the changes, transportation officials urge the motoring public to be patient while remaining aware when traveling through the work zone.
Work on the bridge is expected to continue through the next few months, according to the transportation agency. Officials noted there are still task that need to be completed, including installation of permanent traffic signals, pedestrian signals, ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and signage.

"The I-35 from Stassney Lane to William Cannon Drive project will enhance mobility, safety, and connectivity for all modes of transportation. Improvements include upgraded entrance/exit ramps, reconstructed bridges at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive, and non-signalized U-turns," officials said. "In addition, improved lighting and sidewalks will provide safer bicycle and pedestrian accommodations."
