Here are the top stories today in Austin:
- Last December, construction of a "third joint Austin Fire Department (AFD) and Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) high-priority station" began in West Austin and is expected to be finished by spring 2023. The station, informally known as Loop 360/Davenport, will be located at 4601 Westlake Drive and once it's completed, it will officially be known as AFD Station #52 and ATCEMS Station #41 and "will provide quick access to Loop 360/Capital of Texas Highway and surrounding communities." Mayor Pro-Tem Alison Alter said, "I am pleased to see construction begin on the Loop 360/Davenport Fire and EMS station." She added, "This station will help improve response times in this area and better position our city to respond if a wildfire event occurs." For more details visit: (KVUE.com)
- This upcoming spring, Gabriela's Group restaurant and hospitality company from Austin will be expanding to Houston and will open Gabriela's Midtown Restaurant and Cantina at 1910 Bagby Street in Houston. The restaurant group was launched by siblings Gabriela and Arturo Bucio from Michoacán, Mexico, and their menus are inspired by family recipes such as cocktails with fresh-squeezed juices and fruits, Mexican martinis and palomas, tortas, tostadas, fajitas, ceviche, and an assortment of tacos." - On Tuesday, Feb. 22, former state Sen. Kirk Watson officially announced that he is going to be running for Mayor of Austin. Watson, who previously served as Austin's mayor from 1997-2001, said "Austin is special, but we're facing a lot of challenges ahead. By working together, we can create transformational change that doesn't leave anyone behind." He added, "I want to ensure that our city effectively addresses the range of issues that will define our future. Austin should be thinking big. We should be setting and achieving aspirational goals. And we should be able to do those things while still providing basic, day-to-day services." For details visit: (The Texas Tribune)
