The Best Spring Trips for Austin Families Who Want More Than Just a Beach and Theme Park

Family travel is at its highest level since before the pandemic, and the numbers bear it out. According to the Family Travel Association, 92% of parents plan to travel with their kids this year, with average spending climbing to $8,052 per trip.

The way families are traveling is shifting, too. More are choosing multigenerational trips, more are pulling teens into the planning process, and fewer are defaulting to the same theme park circuit.

"Spring can be about finding a sunny, fun atmosphere as well as a place away from the crowd," says Carolin Fuller, Director of Partnerships at Campspot. "Increasingly, travelers are looking for warm destinations with plenty of activities that are also far from the craziness of the typical spring break experience."

Austin area families have a built-in advantage here. With local schools letting out earlier than much of the country, kids are effectively starting their summer vacations while many popular destinations are still running spring schedules, meaning lower rates, shorter lines, and a lot more breathing room before peak summer travel kicks in.

What most families want, regardless of age, is time together with room to breathe.

Here are some of the best family travel options this spring.

Panama with Copa Airlines Stopover Program (PTY): Through Copa Airlines, families can stay in Panama City for up to seven days at no additional cost to airfare. Panama's dry season runs through April, making spring the most practical time to visit, with a mix of colonial streets, modern city, rainforest, and beach access on either coast.

Puerto Rico (SJU): "Puerto Rico is the perfect immersive destination that will officially give older kids and young adult travelers the travel bug," says Chloe Moreno, Director at Diamond PR. Split the stay between two very different experiences. The Caribe Hilton puts families within walking distance of Old San Juan's cobblestone streets and centuries-old forts, while the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Rio Grande sits at the edge of El Yunque National Rainforest, where spring trails and waterfalls are at their best. No passport required, and get direct flights from most major U.S. cities.

Aruba (AUA): Spring trade winds make Aruba ideal for watersports, and the island sees more beach space and shorter waits as winter peak season winds down. The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino completed a full-room renovation, including updated suites and connecting configurations. The resort has both a family pool and an adults-only pool, and snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, UTV tours, and Palm Beach dining and shopping are all easily accessible.

Galveston Island, Texas (HOU): About an hour from Houston, Galveston has old-school coastal charm with Victorian buildings, a wide seawall, and a walkable Strand district. Stewart Beach and East Beach open in early spring with chair rentals, showers, and ADA-accessible amenities. Moody Gardens runs daily programs across its aquarium, rainforest, and discovery attractions, and the free Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry is a hit for all ages, often with dolphin sightings along the way.

Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile (SGU or SLC): Between Zion and Bryce Canyon, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is the largest companion animal sanctuary in the country, where free tours let families hike with dogs, stroll with cats and bunnies, and give pigs belly rubs.
