Construction Worker Dies, Another Critically Injured In San Antonio

Both men in their 50s fell some 75 feet from a forklift basket that tipped over as they worked on a downtown building together.

SAN ANTONIO, TX — A construction worker fell to his death while working on a downtown building late Monday afternoon.

Two workers were injured, one fatally, after both feel from a forklift near the intersection of North Presa and College Street, according to local media outlets. The deceased worker died at the scene, while his injured co-worker was rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition, KSAT reported.

The two men were working from the bucket of a forklift 75 feet up in the air when the device tipped over, the San Antonio Fire Department told KENS.

Police said both victims were men in their 50s. Investigations by both the San Antonio Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have been launched to assess the reasons the tragic incident occurred.

The site of the construction mishap is just off the main artery Broadway artery in San Antonio, a stone's throw away from the Alamo Plaza and mere blocks from the city's famed Riverwalk, both attractions lighted up with Christmas lights for the holiday season. The incident marred the festive, holiday vibe in downtown San Antonio as passersby stopped to ask about the aftermath of what may have happened there, alerted to the scene by police cars with their overhead lights on after the scene was cleared.
