Coronavirus: Travis County Illness Count Crosses 7K Mark

AUSTIN, TX — The number of cases of the coronavirus across Travis County crossed the 7,000 mark on Thursday, increasing by 183 from the day before to 7,097. The fatality count was unchanged from the previous 24 hours at 116.

The number of new cases over the past 24 hours is less than the 318 reported on Wednesday. Further data on the Austin Public Health dashboard show that 5,076 people have recovered from the respiratory illness. Another 293 people have been hospitalized, including 109 treated at intensive care units and another 43 placed on ventilators.

Recent big spike in illness prompted Gov. Greg Abbott to put a pause on a more robust reopening of the state economy, stopping short of shutting the state down again to promote physical distancing. All manner of businesses have reopened since May 1 when Abbott allowed all manner of enterprises to reopen, albeit at limited occupancy levels.

The governor also implemented a ban on elective surgeries for the second time to accommodate potential coronavirus patients at hospitals.

Austin Public Health officials earlier said data related to increased cases of the coronavirus would not be available on Friday as Austin Public Health upgrades software on its statistical dashboard, officials said. As a result of the maintenance, officials said there would be intermittent outages throughout the day.

This update is a continuation of last week's data migration, officials noted. The links to the dashboard will remain the same post-maintenance:
