1) Travis County judge pleads guilty to DWI. Judge John Lipscombe, who has presided over the drunken driving cases in Travis County Court-at-Law No. 3 since January 2011, pleaded guilty yesterday to driving while intoxicated. He has not returned to his post since the May arrest but plans to return to the bench. KVUE has more on this story here.
2) One person was airlifted to a hospital after falling off a cliff at Mt. Bonnell. Austin-Travis County EMS tweeted that they along with the Austin Fire and Police Departments and STAR Flight responded to the emergency at the popular, city park, Mt. Bonnell. The condition of the patient is unknown. Follow this developing story here at KXAN.
3) Good news: Westlake High School students win a national business pitch competition. The Statesman reports that the team of five spent a year detailing their business plan as a part of their business incubator class at Westlake High. "In May, they won $15,000 at the school's pitch competition. Several months later in July, the team was selected to compete in a national competition and won that, too." Head to the Austin American-Statesman to learn more.
4) New phishing operation targets individuals receiving unemployment benefits. KXAN reports that a new phishing operation is targeting unemployed Texans. Texas Workforce Commission spokesperson, Angela Woellner, says: "[Operations] like this, of course, are trying to take advantage of Texans and we want to make sure that they aren't because a lot of these people are vulnerable and they're really looking for resources and they need that help."
Since June, Texans have reported receiving fraudulent text messages saying their unemployment benefits are available. New reports say fake emails from "TX Unemployment" have been sent alerting users to a purported "new document" that's been uploaded to their account. KXAN has more on this investigation here.
