Dell Children’s nurse met with friendly, familiar care
Nurse grateful for compassionate care

On July 8, Dell Children’s Quality and Safety Department Nurse Annie Thomas knew something was wrong when her young son arrived home from daycare. Shepherd, just 18 months, was experiencing abnormal symptoms, including wheezing and tracheal tugging. Due to her role and background in pediatric critical care, Annie rushed Shepherd to the closest emergency room at Dell Children’s Medical Center where she was met with familiar faces. Prior to her role as a Quality Coordinator at Dell Children’s, Annie was a PICU and Pedi Float Pool Nurse at the hospital. The triage nurse in the ER recognized Annie, and made her son feel comfortable as she examined him.
“Although I have been a pediatric nurse for some time, it’s exceptionally scary to see your own baby in distress like that. The team was gentle and patient,” said Annie. “Shepherd wasn’t scared.”
The team quickly assessed Shepherd. He was diagnosed with a viral infection and received an albuterol treatment. The team checked on him often, and included Annie and her husband in the decision making about whether or not they were comfortable taking him home that night.

“We are so grateful for the care we received. The team provided clear instructions on when and how to use his new inhaler at home. All in all, they made a scary situation much more manageable,” said Annie.
