Downtown Austin Italian Diner Named Best In Texas
Spoiler alert: It's La Traviata, serving up staples — rigatoni with spicy lamb meatballs, cioppino, veal piccata, etc. — since 2000.

AUSTIN, TX — Italian eatery La Traviata has been deemed to be the best restaurant of its kind in all of Texas, according to a culinary website.
The Daily Meal researchers scoured the country in search of the best Italian restaurant in every state. The search in Texas ended with La Traviata, which they consider the best in the state. The eatery located at 314 Congress Ave. is entering its 18th year in business.
"A downtown mainstay that’s been pulling in crowds since 2000, La Traviata is turning out a different homemade ravioli every day, and its lineup of pastas is classic and comforting. All the basics are covered here — spaghetti alla carbonara, pasta norma — and they’re all done very, very well; but make sure you try the rigatoni with spicy lamb meatballs, San Francisco-style cioppino, and veal piccata," scribes at The Daily Meal wrote with a palpable breathlessness.

If you've been, you know the setting and ambiance is just as inviting as its meals. It's an intimate space — a self-described "charming trattoria" as its operators wrote on their website — yet surrounded by large windows that serves up classic Italian plates & wine.
A trattoria is defined as an Italian restaurant serving simple food. As for the diner's name, it's an allusion to a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on La Dame aux Camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas and translates to the Fallen Woman.
