🌱 Food Bank Needs Support + Pink Tax Bill + Top Events This Week 🎭

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Austin.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, everyone! Happy Monday. I hope you all managed to have a fabulous weekend (in spite of the icky weather). I'm back in your inbox this chilly morning with your latest copy of the Austin Daily.

Settle in while we cover:

  • Is Texas finally ready to eradicate the "pink tax"?
  • Supply chain shortages impact a local food bank ahead of the holidays.
  • Create fall-themed crafts with your little ones today.
  • The top events in the Austin-area this week!

But first, today's weather:

Cold with rain and drizzle. High: 45 Low: 41.

Here are the top stories today in Austin:

1) Democratic State Rep. Donna Howard of Austin has filed a bill to lift taxes on menstrual hygiene products for three legislative sessions. As of last Monday, the first day of the legislative filing period, Howard yet again filed a bill to eliminate the so-called "pink tax". KUT reports: "If Rep. Howard's latest bill makes it through the Legislature and becomes law, Texas will join 24 other states that don't tax feminine hygiene products." Check out the full story here.

2) Austin community members and students push for more polling locations at college campuses. Several advocates gathered at the Travis County Commissioners Court meeting on Friday, Nov. 18 to petition for more polling locations on local campuses ahead of the Dec. 13 runoff election. Community Impact reports: "Travis County Commissioners approved polling locations, which included University of Texas' Peter T. Flawn Academic Center—often called FAC. However, the Travis County Clerk's Office did not secure locations for students at St. Edward's University, Huston-Tillotson University, or any Austin Community College campuses." Access to voting locations on campus is critical for students as they juggle busy work and class schedules. Head over to Community Impact for more on this story.

3) The Central Texas Food Bank needs our support! The food bank reports that "about 30% of their shipments were canceled by the United States Department of Agriculture due to nationwide supply chain challenges." As a result, the food bank is purchasing additional food, finding unique ways to work with food donors, and relying more on community support as the demand for supplies grows ahead of Thanksgiving. KXAN has more on how you can support the Central Texas Food Bank this holiday season.

4) No. 1 Texas Volleyball defeats No. 15 Baylor to win the Big 12 Championship! This marks the sixth consecutive Big 12 championship for the Longhorn volleyball squad. KXAN has a full recap of the match.

5) Not interested in cooking a full spread this week? Don't fret. The Statesman has compiled a list of local restaurants open on Thanksgiving Day – check it out. PS: the brioche sage stuffing from Eddie V's sounds absolutely divine!
