Here are the top stories today in Austin:
1) The trial for a former Austin Police Department officer who was indicted on multiple misdemeanor charges began on Tuesday. The former officer, Nathaniel Stallings, is accused of forcefully arresting a woman and causing her bodily injury back in 2017. Stallings resigned from the police department but he was indicted in 2018 — which is when Margaret Moore served as district attorney. This case marks the first officer trial for Travis County District Attorney José Garza. Head to the Austin American-Statesman/subscription for more on this case.
2) City Council continues to discuss solutions to mitigate the impact of Austin Energy's utility rate hike. Austin Energy customers' electricity bills are going up. That, unfortunately, is no longer up for debate. That said, City Council is meeting this week to figure out how to minimize the impact on family budgets. Head to FOX 7 Austin to learn about the options being discussed.
3) Austin wants to update its cemetery rules for the first time in 45 years — wow! On Monday, city officials held a community engagement meeting to get the public's input on changes that would overhaul the 1978 rules. CBS Austin reports that the existing rules have been labeled as "outdated and vague," with community members citing inconsistent enforcement of rules at the City of Austin-maintained cemeteries. Head to CBS Austin for the full scoop.
4) Meat-cutting competition sets up shop in Austin. The Texas Roadhouse Meat Cutter Competition was held at Chaparral Ice Northcross on Tuesday, hosting 14 Texas Roadhouse professional meat cutters from the region. Each meat cutter had exactly one hour to cut 30 - 40 pounds of beef and were judged on quality, yield and speed. Head to the Austin-American Statesman to see the pictures from this event.
