Grand Jury Declines To Indict Austin Officer Who Killed Gunman At Omni Austin Hotel Lobby: VIDEO
Officer Carlos Lopez cleared of wrongdoing for fatally shooting a rifle-toting man who had just killed a taxi driver in the hotel's lobby.

Austin, TX -- A grand jury on Tuesday no-billed the Austin police officer who fatally shot a gunman at the downtown Omni Austin hotel last year, effectively clearing the lawman of any wrongdoing, according to media reports.
Members of the Travis County grand jury opted not to indict officer Carlos Lopez, for killing Michael McGregor Holtin the lobby of the hotel, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Toting a rifle, Holt killed a taxi driver, Conrado Contreras, who had entered the lobby unaware of the gunman's presence.
The grisly scene unfolded at about 4:30 a.m. last summer.

Officers showed up after the 60-year-old taxi driver was killed, exchanging gunfire with Holt. Lopez wounded the gunman after firing multiple times at Holt, who escaped to the dining area of the hotel.
The officer pursued Holt, cornering him while shouting at him to show his hands. Lawyers with the district attorney's office said Holt instead fired at Lopez yet again, forcing the officer to return fire. Lopez shot Holt multiple times, killing him.
In May of this year, the Austin Police Department released surveillance video from the hotel lobby that recorded the police confrontation:
