Austin Heat Index Will Make It Feel Like 111 Degrees On Sunday

It's been said if you don't like the weather in Texas, wait 5 minutes and it'll change. This aphorism will be in stark display on June 9.

AUSTIN, TX — It's often been said that if you don't like the Texas weather, just wait five minutes and it will change. Such is the mercurial nature of the climate in the Lone Star State, which will be in stark display come Sunday when the heat index is expected to reach 111 degrees.

That's not a typo. Meteorologists say temperatures will be in the higher 90s in Austin on Sunday, but it will feel like 111 (one-hundred eleven) degrees by the afternoon. Sunday afternoon will usher in degrees with a heat index of 107 degrees before climbing four more notches, according to forecasters.

This comes after two days of heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday that were accompanied by strong winds and hail in some areas. By nightfall, temperatures will dip into the mid 70s, with low-flowing winds between five and ten miles per hour shifting to the north. That Sunday forecast also will come 24 hours after an "Ozone Action Day" that will be in effect for much of Texas on Saturday.

So put on some sunscreen, think about wearing a hat, maybe dip into a pool and/or grab a big ol' sweet tea come Sunday. And then, once your Sunday fun day ends, get ready for the possibility of more rain. The National Weather Service predicts a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Monday, diminishing to 20 percent by Tuesday.

Because you know you're from Texas when you listen to the weather forecast before picking out an outfit. Where school gets canceled for 1/2 an inch of snow, and your "snowman" is under 2 feet tall composed primarily of dirt, twigs and leaves. Where hot water comes out of both taps.

You get the idea.
