Here are the top stories today in Austin:
- This was a historic year for University of Texas (UT) athletic teams! On Sunday, June 19, they ended the 2021-22 season with "four NCAA Championships, 12 top five and 14 top 10 NCAA finishes, while winning 11 Big 12 Conference titles!" They also "earned six NCAA Championship runner-up finishes to secure a school-best 10 top two finishes!" According to an announcement from last week, "UT has earned enough points to clinch the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup for the second-straight year!" Hook Em! (TexasSports.com)
- From Thursday, June 23 through Sunday, June 26, the 2nd Annual Banger's Renaissance Festival will be taking place at Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden, at 79, 81, 81 ½ Rainey St. in Austin. The event will feature food and drink specials, as well as music, games and contests. For days and times and for more details, go to BangersAustin.com and: (KXAN.com)
- The Austin Parks Foundation invites the community and their pets to "Movies in the Park" at Austin area parks. This year, they're offering a "series of free films" in partnership "with Rocket to Cinema." The film week starts with "a screening of 'The Goonies' (rated PG) at Dick Nichols District Park." Guests can bring picnics, blankets or lawn chairs, but alcoholic beverages, glass and Styrofoam will not be allowed. Although recycling bins will be available, visitors are encouraged to pack out their own trash. "Smoking is also prohibited in the park, per city law." (Austin.com)
- A "quinceañera" is a Hispanic/Latinx "celebration of the 15th birthday, marking a transition to adulthood." In Austin's Travis County, "33 percent of the population" is Hispanic or Latino and "in Texas, Hispanics and Latinos are the fastest-growing group. However, "there are few shows and expos for quinceañeras" in Austin. Jason Rubio of Quince Expos and Ricky Lopez-Galindo of Ricky's Events Boutique Ricky, in partnership with Universal Event Center, are changing that! On Sunday, June 26, they will host the 2022 Austin Quince Expo at the Universal Event Center, located at 16303 Terrace Drive. For more details and times, contact Quince Expos at 737-285-6949 and visit their website at https://QuinceExpos.com. (Digital Journal)
- Summer is here, which means it's time to swim, camp and other fun summer fun! However, summer is also filled with annoying pests, "and not even the heat can stop" those "creepy crawly creatures" from bothering you! "To learn more about the top three summer pests and what we can do to survive them," watch an interview with "Meteorologist Kristen Currie and Entomologist Wizzie Brown from the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension" or read the transcript at: (KXAN.com)
