JCPenney To Close Up To 140 Stores Nationwide, Possibly Among Its 90-Plus In Texas

PLANO, TX — Officials at Texas-based JCPenney will release by mid-March a list of up to 140 of its stores slated for closure as the retailer struggles to compete in an changing business landscape.

The company disclosed on Friday of its plans to close the stores, the number to be shuttered representing roughly 14 percent of its current locations. and 5 percent of the chain's annual sales. The stores targeted for closure are under-performing locations or those needing too large a capital investment to align them to updated retailer standards, JCPenney CEO Marvin R. Ellison said in a prepared statement.

The company also plans to shutter distribution centers in Lakeland, Fla., and Buena Park, Calif.

“We believe closing stores will also allow us to adjust our business to effectively compete against the growing threat of online retailers,” Ellison said.

The company plans to offer voluntary early retirement to some 6,000 affected employees, the CEO said. Those workers not eligible for early retirement will receive separation benefits, including assistance in finding new jobs, according to the company statement.

Company officials expect the closures will save some $200 million this year alone. The company had annual sales of $12.63 billion in 2016, up from $12.26 billion in 2015.

JCPenney is the latest retailer to announce closures in an industry trend of shutting down brick-and-mortar storefronts in an age of greater online purchases by consumers. Earlier this year, Macy’s announced it would close 68 of its stores. Kmart and Sears have also announced store closings over the past year.
