Johnny Manziel Girlfriend Abuse Case Referred To Grand Jury

Ex-girlfriend accused former Texas A&M standout of hitting and threatening to kill her.

DALLAS, TX -- Dallas police have referred their domestic violence case against Johnny Manziel to a grand jury to determine whether to charge the quarterback for an alleged attack on a girlfriend.

The case was transferred to the grand jury on Thursday, according to multiple reports. In a prepared statement, police officials said they’ve asked the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office to present a misdemeanor assault case to the grand jury, ESPN reports.

The charge potentially carries a maximum one-year jail sentence and a $4,000 fine. Manziel’s attorney and NFL officials didn’t respond to ESPN’s requests for comment.

Even before the grand jury’s conclusion, repercussions for Manziel stemming from the incident already have been considerable. Both his agent and marketing agency have dropped him from representation, and the Cleveland Browns for which Manziel serves as a quarterback have indicated they’ll cut him from the team as early as next month.

The latest incident is part of a pattern of accusations against Manziel, who has been accused of similar altercations in the past.

It’s been a spectacular fall from grace for Manziel since winning the Heisman Trophy in 2012 for Texas A&M as a freshman, after which he was hailed as something of a folk hero nicknamed “Johnny Football.”

The grand jury case centers on allegations from Jan. 30 when Colleen Crowley accused Manziel of hitting and threatening to kill her during a night out in Dallas. The woman said the athlete accosted her at a Dallas hotel and struck her as they drove back to a Fort Worth apartment.
