Local Group Honors Cedar Park Police As 'Hometown Heroes'

The event had been planned weeks before, but its timing in the wake of the Dallas shooting made it that much more timely.

Cedar Park, TX -- A local organization on Saturday staged a ceremony putting an official stamp on what most residents already know -- Cedar Park police are true hometown heroes.

Members of the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal benefit society, organized the tribute weeks ago. But the timing on the heels of the Dallas shooting rampage that left five officers dead made the gathering that much more emotionally resonant.
In reporting on the event, KXAN interviewed the group's director who noted the importance of showing support for local law enforcement.
“A lot of disruption in our nation, that alone says that we need to go an extra step," the group's regional director, Kelly Herring, said. "The job that they do is very important and when we need them, they’re there.”
The event was part of a summer long campaign called ‘Modern Woodmen’s Everyday Hero Campaign.’

“We really wanted to make an extra appearance to let our guys and ladies know that we really appreciate the work that they do,” Herring told the television station.
Officers were not only feted, but received donations to their favored charities.
The Modern Woodmen of America plans another event honoring police officers during a Round Rock Express baseball game next Saturday, the news station reported.
