Here are the top stories in Austin today:
1) A Texas child welfare agency fires an employee for encouraging a foster child to consider sex work. The Texas Tribune reports that the Texas agency responsible for investigating abuse and exploitation of children has fired an employee for encouraging a foster child to consider sex work. The Tribune states that "The child in the state's foster care system was being housed at a Harris County hotel while awaiting placement. She was asking for food when the staff member proposed sex work." The entire interaction was caught on video. The Texas Tribune has more on this story here.
2) Longhorn legend Steve Worster passes away. Legendary Texas fullback Steve Worster, one of the inspirations for the creation of the Wishbone, died Saturday at 73. He led Bridge City to a Texas High School Football state title in 1966 and was part of two national champion University of Texas football teams. Learn more about Steve's legacy here at Texas Sports.
3) Good news: Austinite breaks the world record for the fastest trip to all 50 states. Austin resident Peter McConville and two of his friends always dreamed of visiting all 50 states. McConville, Pavel (Pasha) Krechetov, and Abdullahi Salah now hold the record for the fastest visit to all 50 states in the United States, completing the journey in five days, 13 hours, and 10 minutes – WOW! The former record holder completed the trip in five days, 16 hours, and 20 minutes. KXAN has more on their record-setting journey here.
4) Storm out of the Gulf of Mexico brings rain to South Texas, but had little impact on hot, dry Austin area. The Statesman reports that areas along the state's coastline are experiencing "exceptional rainfall" due to the storm as flood warnings have been issued and extended for several counties in South Texas, but the drought continues in Central Texas.
