Man Dies After Being Pulled From Barton Creek

Medics attempted to save victim with CPR after he went underwater, but the man in his 20s died shortly afterwards.

AUSTIN, TX — A man was pronounced dead at the scene after being pulled out of Barton Creek late Thursday, officials said.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics administered CPR on the victim, a man in his 20s, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards. It's unclear how long the man was underwater before he passed away.

The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. along the 2200 block of Barton Springs Road, according to emergency officials.

This is the second time in less than a week that a body has been pulled from Barton Creek. On Mother's Day, May 13, a body was pulled from from the water in the Barton Creek greenbelt near Twin Falls in South Austin Sunday afternoon, officials said. The possible drowning victim reportedly was discovered by a visitor who was snorkeling at the site before police were called to the scene.

Other similar incidents have been reported in area bodies of water in the last few days. Also on Thursday, the body of a missing swimmer at Lake Pflugerville was recovered by the Travis County Sheriff's Office dive team late afternoon, officials said. Police were notified abut the missing swimmer on Wednesday around 3:24 p.m. when a an in his 20s was reported to have gone under water approximately 50 feet from the North Shore of the lake without resurfacing.

Last Saturday, May 12, medics were dispatched to Southeast Austin for a near-drowning incident. Austin-Travis County EMS personnel arrived at McKinney Falls State Park in Southeast Austin where they rescued a teenage boy from the water at 5808 McKinney Falls Parkway. The victim was transported by STAR Flight to Dell Children's Medical Center for treatment of critical, potentially life-threatening injuries, medics said.

On May 5, a family boating outing on Lake Travis turned tragic when a 53-year-old man went underwater never to resurface. Divers have yet to recover the body, identifying the victim as Manuel Salas, 53, of Elgin, Texas.
